Hydraulic Head

Supply assurance

Solutions > Hydraulic Head

In open canals water distribution, the guarantee of an adequate supply to all the bypasses is essential. The proposed solutions approach the design with a view to simplify operation and maintenance.

Common situations

One of the critical issues in open canal water distribution is to guarantee the capacity to supply all the bypasses at the right time. Even when designers recognize this situation, sometimes the site characteristics do not allow the necessary flexibility to cover the users' needs. In low flow events, many intakes become inoperable due to the insufficient water level in the main canal, even if a flow is available for bypassing.

Technical Challenge

TEMEC solves this problem with solutions that contribute to the efficiency of the distribution of water resources, with the installation of elements on the principal canal designed to conserve energy and to evacuate overflows during periods of high flows, preventing upstream spills, as well as to adjust their ranges during periods of lower flows, with the purpose of guaranteeing the distribution. Speed of response to changes in level and flow, resistance to vandalism and weather conditions are essential aspects.

Our technical solutions focus on efficient and sustainable performance in time.

Features

  • Guarantee of control of upstream levels.
  • Guaranteed functionality in severe weather conditions and safety in case of blockages.
  • No electrical power is required for operation.
  • High sensitivity to changes in canal.
  • Allows set point changes to adapt to operational changes (remote controllable).
  • Low and simple maintenance.

Tips about use

  • It can be motorized and remote-controlled, with small DC motors and solar panel, simplifying the set point changeover operation.
  • It requires knowing the flow curve of the downstream section to obtain the flow rate.
  • Requires some rubber sealing equipment to achieve complete leak-tightness.

Safety and Reliability

TEMEC CAR1 Autonomous Gate

Guarantee of constant upstream regulation, prioritizing the demand upstream of the installation. Completely autonomous, robust and reliable solution.

This solution does not allow the regulated levels to be modified once they have been defined on site.

Features

These solutions guarantee a constant upstream level of these gates, controlled by floats and ballast weights. AR1 gates play a key role in the management of a canal, maintaining the maximum level by automatically opening and closing in accordance with the flow to be evacuated.

Their capacity to prioritize upstream bypass over consumption in the downstream discharge is outstanding. The AR1 gate immediately and autonomously responds to flow variations, ensuring efficient management and preservation of the desired maximum level in the canal. The absence of motors and sensors contributes to the robustness and reliability of this equipment.

► Tips about use

This solution includes equipment inspired by a simple hydraulic design, totally autonomous, robust and devoid of any mechanical complication, allowing it to adapt to the most severe working conditions.

Features

  • Guarantee of constant upstream level.
  • Low associated head loss.
  • Guaranteed functionality in severe weather conditions.
  • Guarantee of opening at critical upstream level.
  • High reaction speed.
  • Control of transitory flows in the event of rapid closure.
  • No solids retained at the bottom of the canal.
  • Low and simple maintenance.

Tips about use

  • It does not open until it ensures the operating level.
  • To know the through flow, it must be installed in association with another device or hydraulic solution that allows the measurement.
  • Requires some rubber sealing equipment to achieve complete leak-tightness.

Adaptable to existing projects

TEMEC Automated Slide Gates

For canals with predictable flow, to provide a guarantee of reserve in the canal. Manual or automated solution.

This solution allows connection of the equipment to new or existing remote control systems.

Features

These solutions consider generating a backwater upstream of the site to provide bypass control using sliding gates or sector gates.

The generation of an upstream backwater compatible with the minimum required level is performed by installing a flat or sector gate that obstructs the canal. By allowing the discharge from the bottom, it allows the removal of sediments and other accumulated elements. It is essential to have qualified staff to operate these gates, ensuring that the opening is compatible with the circulating flow as well as with the required level upstream.

They are manufactured on demand, therefore they can be perfectly adapted to the existing civil works forms. These devices open or close in an automated way following commands that have been loaded into the remote control system. They also allow local manual operation.

► Tips about use

This solution includes equipment inspired by a simple hydraulic design, robust and free of any mechanical complication, allowing it to adapt to the most severe working conditions.

Features

  • Adaptability to existing works.
  • High sealing properties.
  • Automated and manual operation allowed.
  • Guaranteed functionality in severe weather conditions.
  • No solids retained at the bottom of the canal.
  • Simple maintenance.

Tips about use

  • Requires software to calibrate upstream and downstream levels for the flow curve.
  • Requires electrical power to operate in automated mode.
  • Maintenance should be performed by personnel trained in electronics.

Adaptable and versatile

TEMEC Automated or Manual Tilting Weir (Overshot) Gates

For canalizations with expected flow, to guarantee the domain in the bypass. Manual or automated solution.

This solution allows connection of the equipment to new or existing remote control systems.

Features

These solutions propose the generation of a minimum desired upstream level of the installation, in order to guarantee control in the bypass, by using top discharge Tilting Weir Gates.

In situations where the operating hydrograph of the canal is known and expected, it is possible to install devices designed to maintain a certain minimum level without significantly affecting the canal when the flow increases. A simple and versatile solution is the use of turn-axis flaps at the bottom of the conduit.

Depending on the operation, the gate creates a partial obstruction of the flow, causing a corresponding backwater. In this way, the desired intake level is guaranteed. It is important to note that this element requires manual operation and must be dropped at increased flow times. Automatic operation can be considered by gear mechanisms or even by an oleo-hydraulic installation.

► Tips about use

This solution includes equipment inspired by a simple hydraulic design, robust and free of any mechanical complication, allowing it to adapt to the most severe working conditions.

Features

  • Adaptability to new or existing works.
  • Guaranteed functionality in severe weather conditions.
  • Recommended for wide and narrow canals.
  • Simple maintenance.

Tips about use

  • Solid retention can be generated upstream of the installation, so it is necessary to consider a hydraulic cleaning system for the chamber.
