Flood Control

Overflow lamination to accumulation areas

Solutions > Flood Control

Effective flood management is crucial to prevent environmental damage and protect communities. The proposed solutions focus on design for simplified operation and maintenance.

Common situations

Natural river flow tends to remain within a stable range throughout the year, but at certain moments can increase significantly, which can result in flooding and other problems downstream. This can also occur in canals used as storm drains.

Flood control has historically been achieved through the construction of dams and/or the installation of longitudinal dams. These solutions are usually large scale and require significant investment.

Technical Challenge

TEMEC faces this problem with autonomous, medium-sized solutions that significantly mitigate the effects of floods and prevent uncontrolled flooding, always without the need for human operation. Speed of response to changes in level and flow, resistance to vandalism and weather conditions are essential aspects.

Two ways of solving these cases are proposed, one using existing water basins and the other using areas for temporary flooding.

  1. When using existing water basins, it is essential to have the capacity to accumulate and manage in a controlled way the volumes corresponding to the floods, where with a few centimeters of flooding, these volumes can be accumulated to laminate.
  2. Using areas for temporary flooding, where a critical level in the natural riverbed is established, which once reached, allows flows to be bypassed to these areas where flooding will cause less inconvenience. This lateral bypass of controlled flows at the right time helps to manage the volume coinciding with the peak of the flood, allowing then a controlled return to the conduction or the possibility of infiltration or evaporation of the overflow.

To implement these strategies, CAR1 or CMXT gates can be used, selecting the most appropriate option according to the terrain conditions. The primary objective of these solutions is to "reduce peak flood flow."

Our technical solutions focus on efficient and sustainable performance in time.

Our Solutions for Flood Control

Safety, Reliability and Versatility

TEMEC CMXT Autonomous Gate

Guaranteed hydraulic energy and control for flood bypass to areas destined for controlled flooding. Completely autonomous, robust and reliable solution, even in severe weather conditions.

It allows modifying the regulated levels by means of manual or automated setpoint changes.

Features

These solutions provide for the accumulation of a volume of water up to a critical level, after which the gate opens autonomously, in a progressive way, and starts to discharge, in a controlled way, the excess flow. This critical level is adjustable ( contrary to the AR1 solution). This makes it possible to accumulate a larger volume of water to anticipate a flood peak or to keep the water basin full for later recreational or ecological uses.

These gates allow a limited reverse flow, which facilitates the automatic draining of controlled flood zones once the flood has gone over. The absence of motors and sensors contributes to the robustness and reliability of this equipment.

► Tips about use

This solution includes equipment inspired by a simple hydraulic design, totally autonomous, robust and free of any mechanical complication, allowing it to adapt to the most severe working conditions.

Features

  • Guarantee of opening before the critical level upstream.
  • Guaranteed functionality in severe weather conditions and safety in case of blockages.
  • No electrical power is required for operation.
  • High sensitivity to river changes
  • Allows set point changes to adapt to operational changes (remote controllable).
  • Low and simple maintenance.

Tips about use

  • It can be motorized and remote-controlled, with small DC motors and solar panel, simplifying the set point changeover operation.
  • It requires knowing the flow curve of the downstream section to obtain the flow rate.
  • Requires some rubber sealing equipment to achieve complete leak-tightness.

Safety and Reliability

TEMEC CAR1 Autonomous Gate

Guarantee of constant upstream regulation for flood control and controlled drainage downstream of the installation. Completely autonomous, robust and reliable solution.

This solution does not allow the regulated levels to be modified once they have been defined on site.

Features

These solutions allow the accumulation of a volume of water up to a critical level, after which the gate opens immediately and autonomously, in a progressive way, and starts to discharge, in a controlled way, the exceeding flow. Once the excess water has been evacuated, the gate closes again completely. This makes it possible to accumulate a large volume of water to anticipate a flood peak or to keep the body of water full for later recreational or ecological uses.

The critical level is not modifiable after the equipment foundation level has been defined. Because it is not sealed, it continues releasing a volume of water, but considerably reduced. This makes it possible to regulate a larger volume when floods are separated in time.

It is possible to associate multiple CAR1 gates to create serial accumulation zones or to lead the controlled flow to different storage basins with limited capacity. The absence of motors and sensors contributes to the robustness and reliability of this equipment.
